Michigan State football could be aiming to land one of the nation’s top defensive tackle prospects in the 2019 class as Jowon Briggs is standing out.

A name that may not necessarily sound familiar is emerging in Michigan State’s 2019 class recruiting board. Four-star defensive tackle Jowon Briggs from Cincinnati, Ohio, is one of the Spartans’ top priorities in the class and his recruitment is heating up.

Believe it or not, the Spartans were one of the first teams to offer Briggs back in March of 2017. He holds offers from some of college football’s elite programs such as Ohio State, Alabama, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Penn State and Michigan.

So where do the Spartans stand?

According to a recent interview with Michigan State’s Rivals reporter Jim Comparoni, Briggs says that Michigan State, along with other programs, already has its foot in the door in his recruitment and he’s trying to figure out what he wants as a college player.

Briggs is in no hurry to decide, which will help the Spartans as he’s been to campus, but could spend one of his official visits on Michigan State.

Mark Dantonio loves big, strong defensive linemen almost as much as he loves recruits from the state of Ohio. That combination makes him one of the Spartans’ top priorities in the 2019 class.

If you go solely by the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Ohio State and Notre Dame look like the leaders, but Michigan State has been in contact with Briggs along the way.

The 6-2, 275-pound tackle from Ohio may be a top target for Urban Meyer, but the Buckeyes’ class always seems to be filling up with blue-chippers. The Spartans could steal another gem from the Buckeye State and he’s be an instant contributor on a thin defensive line.

Briggs is listed as the No. 73 recruit in the country as well as the fifth-best tackle and No. 2 prospect in the state of Ohio, per the 247Sports composite.
