6. Little Giants (2010)

The call: “It’s a fake. Bates is gonna throw. He’s got him! Touchdown. Michigan State wins it in overtime. The call of the year.”

No, it’s not George Blaha, but Brad Nessler’s call in the 2010 ‘Little Giants’ game against Notre Dame was one that could still bring chills to any Spartan fan.

In a back-and-forth game, Michigan State and Notre Dame went to overtime tied at 28 apiece. The Irish got the first crack in overtime, kicking a field goal to take the leader and Michigan State would aim to tie it and send it to double overtime but Dan Conroy was lining up for a longer kick than expected after the Spartans lost yardage on their first possession.

Everyone was holding their breath as Conroy lined up, but Aaron Bates took the snap, stood up, rolled to his right and hit Charlie Gantt for the game-winning touchdown as Nessler and everyone watching the game could barely believe their eyes.

It’s always a special call when a national broadcaster gets excited over a play, and this was a perfect example of that.
