Michigan State Basketball: Do Spartans stand chance with 5-star Tyrese Maxey?
Michigan State basketball is in the running for five-star point guard Tyrese Maxey who will be announcing his decision on Wednesday.
Michigan State’s 2019 recruiting class has yet to get off the ground, but Tom Izzo is working to change that. One of the top targets for the Spartans is five-star point guard Tyrese Maxey from Garland, Texas. He recently listed Michigan State in his top-five and is announcing on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, it looks like Maxey is more than likely headed to Kentucky rather than his other four finalists, including Michigan State.
The Spartans had good standing with Maxey early on, but it seemed as if the two sides drifted apart slightly. Maxey’s father was hired at SMU and it looked as if the Mustangs would keep him close to home, but he has left them off his top five, naming Michigan, Michigan State, Texas, Oklahoma State and Kentucky.
So what are the Spartans’ chances to land Maxey on Wednesday when he announces his decision?
Honestly, not great. Barring some sort of miracle, Maxey will be playing basketball in the SEC for the Wildcats. He named the Wildcats his leader just a couple of weeks ago and not much has changed since then. The idea of starting at point for a program that continuously produces top-level NBA talent has to be enticing for the Garland, Texas, native.
Maxey will be announcing his decision on Wednesday evening around 4 p.m. CT, but don’t hold your breath.
