The top player in the state of Michigan and front-runner for Mr. Basketball in 2019 is also high on the Spartans’ list of priorities. Romeo Weems, a four-star prospect, has been on Michigan State’s radar since his freshman season with New Haven when he was dominating at the varsity level.

Not many kids can stand out as freshmen in high school, but Weems looked like a man among boys even back then. He’s only gotten better as his prep career has progressed and he’s the ultimate stat-sheet stuffer.

In fact, he has been known for posting triple-doubles and he hasn’t been that far off from quadruple-doubles for New Haven as a junior. He can defend, rebound, shoot and get to the foul line. He’s aggressive and is a matchup nightmare since he does a little, or a lot, of everything.

Weems is ranked the No. 1 prospect in Michigan for 2019 as well as the 38th-best player and sixth-best small forward. It wouldn’t be all that shocking to see the 6-7, 215-pound prospect earn that fifth star before his career is over.

Tom Izzo has been in to check on him multiple times this past season.
