Quarterback: A-

Yes, Michigan State landed just one quarterback, but that’s the norm for a Mark Dantonio recruiting class. Most programs only recruit a single quarterback, but adding two solid passers would likely have been the only way to grade this an A — or if the Spartans were to land Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields (the top-two ranked quarterbacks of 2018).

Theo Day is one heck of a quarterback and he often gets overlooked when speaking of the future. Everyone knows Brian Lewerke is the starter for the next year or two until he departs for the NFL and Rocky Lombardi has the potential to replace him, but Day is also capable of competing.

Lombardi is the next man up and Messiah deWeaver’s transfer proved that. If a solid quarterback like deWeaver leaves, you know that Lombardi is that good. But don’t sleep on Day, either.

Day is 6-foot-5 and 197 pounds. He’s slight of frame, but will grow into that body at Michigan State. His height is what makes him an intriguing prospect as that won’t be an issue during his time in East Lansing. He’s also more mobile than people realize. He reminds me a bit of Connor Cook, but with more athleticism.

The 2018 signee will have to wait his turn under center, but he’s a solid pickup for Dantonio. He’s also ranked the No. 240 overall recruit and ninth-best quarterback in the class out of Dearborn, Mich.
