Wide Receivers

Signees: Jalen Nailor (Composite three-star, 0.8635), Julian Major (Composite three-star, 0.8573), ATH Javez Alexander (Compsite three-star, 0.8378), WR/CB Jalen Allen (Preferred walk-on)

Despite two transfers, Michigan State will return one of the Big Ten’s best receiving groups in 2018. While the losses of Hunter Rison and Trishton Jackson are disappointing, the Spartans are loaded with Felton Davis III, Cody White and Darrell Stewart Jr. back and Cam Chambers poised to make an impact.

Behind those four are sophomores Laress Nelson and redshirt freshman C.J. Hayes. Considering this depth, it’s unlikely any of the incoming freshman will make a major impact in the receiving game, but Jalen Nailor or Julian Major could find their way onto the field if they demonstrate game-changing ability in the return game.

The athletic Javez Alexander appears to have great upside, but as a converted dual-threat quarterback, he’ll likely need a redshirt year to develop into a full-time pass-catcher.

Tight End

Signee: Trenton Gillison (Composite four-star, 0.9089)

Brian Lewerke is one lucky guy. As if a strong group of returning linemen, running backs and receivers isn’t enough, he will also have a solid unit of tight ends to rely on in 2018. Senior Matt Sokol will lead the group and underclassmen Matt Dotson and Noah Davis look like emerging talents.

While this depth would typically suggest a redshirt for any incoming tight ends, the newest addition might be too talented to keep on the sidelines. Four-star Ohio product Trenton Gillison has the type of elite size and ability that will force the coaching staff to seriously consider giving him early playing time. Whether that happens or not will be up to Gillison, but don’t be surprised if the Spartans’ second-highest rated signee sees his fair share of snaps as a true freshman.
