Michigan State football “missed” on four-star receiver Tommy Bush, but it was expected. Here’s why it won’t matter much.

Have you ever had the perfect ice cream sundae and all you needed was that cherry on top to put it over the top? That’s exactly what Michigan State’s receiving corps were looking for in four-star wide receiver Tommy Bush. He would have been the cherry on top of the sundae.

However, he stuck with the National Signing Day trend and committed to Georgia over Michigan State, Baylor, Texas and Ole Miss. It was a bit of a shock to see him put on the Bulldogs’ hat after being a Baylor-lean for some time, but it wasn’t surprising to see him pass up Michigan State.

No, that’s not a shot at the Spartans. Mark Dantonio did an excellent job in recruiting Bush and it’s not often a top recruit from Texas is considering Michigan State on National Signing Day. I am, however, pointing to the fact that Michigan State wasn’t expecting Bush to become a Spartan.

What gave that away? Just a few days before signing day, the staff gave three-star wide out Jalen Nailor the green light to commit. That was the moment fans realized that the staff was ready to close the door on the Bush recruitment and move on.

Just because the Spartans “missed” on Bush doesn’t mean the receiving corps are taking a hit. They weren’t expecting Bush but rather hoping he would be just another elite piece to the already-impressive puzzle.

Michigan State is returning Felton Davis III who broke out as one of the best receivers in the Big Ten in 2017, Cody White who was a top freshman, Darrell Stewart Jr. who had a breakout year and guys like Cam Chambers and CJ Hayes who could have big impacts in 2018.

Yes, it hurts to miss on Bush, but the Spartans are just fine at the receiver position and will add even more top targets in 2019.
