5. Fred Smith, WR/RB (2008-10)

Mark Dantonio achieved a major recruiting vicotory when Fred Smith signed with the green and white. He had offers from the likes of Wisconsin, Michigan and even Ohio State showed interest in the Southwestern High School product.

However, Smith was unable to be a regular on the field. He was also involved in the Rather Hall incident in 2009 and spent some time in jail.

Unable to crack the wide receiver rotation, Smith moved to fullback, something Dantonio has done before with players like Lawerence Thomas. He ended up moving back to wide receiver, however, being burried on the depth chart was too much to over come. He ended up transferring with two years of eligibility left.

It was a disappointing end to a player who on National Signing Day had showed so much promise. Potential is a dangerous word and it is equally difficult for players to live up to it.
