3. Nick Ward records another double-double

Standing 6-foot-8, 245 pounds, Nick Ward has been a handful for everyone he’s encountered in the post this season. Just like last year, he has been a matchup nightmare because it’s not just his strong frame that gives defenders trouble, but his aggressive play. He doesn’t quit on plays and he’s usually utilizing post moves when he gets the ball down low.

Most of the time when Ward touches the ball in the post, he’s finding a way to go up with the ball and either draw a foul or make a baby hook or layup — or both. He’s been fantastic this season in his limited action, averaging 14.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.

All of his numbers are up from a year ago, including his free throw percentage, just slightly, and his field goal percentage. One major number is down, though, and that’s his minutes. He’s averaging just 18.2 per game as opposed to 19.8 last year. However, the Spartans have more depth down low this year, which is a reason for the minor dip.

Ward will utilize his limited minutes again on Thursday night, racking up another 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds and three blocks. This will mark his second double-double in three games and his third on the season. And no, it won’t be his last — far from it.
