3. Matt Coghlin is already more reliable than Michael Geiger

Let’s pump the brakes on this one. While Matt Coghlin had his best game as Michigan State’s starting kicker, going 4-for-4 on field goals and making a career-long 46-yarder. He also made each of his extra points to account for 16 total points on the day in the route of Rutgers.

Some have been calling Coghlin a more reliable kicker than Michael Geiger was while he played for the Spartans from 2013-16. It’s too early to make a statement like that because everyone was saying the same about Geiger after his freshman year.

In fact, people were quick to say Geiger would be the best kicker Mark Dantonio had after his freshman year in which he drilled 15-of-16 field goals and made 36-of-38 extra points. He dropped off considerably as a sophomore and junior before bouncing back as a senior.

Coghlin has the potential to be a great kicker for Michigan State and everyone knows how important that is to have, but he will need to prove that this season wasn’t his ceiling and put together a strong 2018 campaign. He has, however, been lights out since missing two field goals against Northwestern.
