1. Michigan State will be lucky to win eight games

Chin up, Spartan fans. This was a common theme among the fan base after the loss to Northwestern. One thing you don’t have to worry about from this point on is the Spartans’ postseason hopes. Michigan State will be going bowling, no matter what.

Another thing that gets overlooked by too many fans, especially after the loss on Saturday: Michigan State still controls its own destiny in the Big Ten East. You can’t sit there and say Michigan State is guaranteed to not win the conference title because the hope is still alive.

In fact, the Spartans could pull closer to that with a win over Penn State at home this weekend and an upset of Ohio State the following week. Michigan State plays well against Penn State at home, usually, and the Ohio State game is always close — decided by one point last year when MSU went 3-9.

Don’t be so gloomy after a tough triple-overtime loss on the road to a quality Big Ten opponent. Sure, the Wildcats were beatable, but the Spartans are young and will learn from these mistakes.

This team has the potential to win 10 games. Will it? It’s too early to tell, but that’s still on the table along with the Big Ten title hopes.
