2. Brian Lewerke’s mistakes cost Michigan State the game

Some people really sat there after Saturday’s loss to Northwestern and blamed sophomore quarterback Brian Lewerke for the loss. Really. It happened. I saw it.

It was mind-boggling to read the comments on social media regarding Lewerke’s performance against the Wildcats. He finished with a Michigan State single-game record for passing yards as well as total yards. He almost single-handedly kept the Spartans in the game when it looked to be over.

With the Wildcats taking a 17-10 lead in the fourth quarter, all hope seemed to be lost with Michigan State missing a couple of field goals and being unable to reach the end zone since the first drive of the game. However, Lewerke put on his playmaking hat and led the Spartans down the field for a tying score with 20 seconds left.

In overtime, he made some big throws as well and was accurate as can be late in the game after missing some passes down the field early on. Yes, Michigan State literally lost on an ill-advised interception of his in the third overtime, but he was the reason the Spartans made it that far.
