Despite finishing with a loss against Northwestern, Michigan State football can rest easy knowing that Brian Lewerke took a major step forward.

Scrambling out to his left after nearly losing a fumble in overtime No. 3, Brian Lewerke made a great play which looked to save the game for Michigan State. As he was rolling to his left, he didn’t find anyone open, but instead of throwing the ball away, he threw it into double-coverage across his body and Northwestern picked it off.

The game was over and no one was more disappointed than Lewerke.

The sophomore quarterback had already shown plenty of character in a game that tested his will to win. With just minutes left, he led Michigan State down the field to tie the game at 17-17 thanks to a beautiful pass and catch by Felton Davis III.

Lewerke’s throw will be remembered by his harshest critics, including himself, but one thing was for certain despite the loss: he grew up big-time.

Not only did he lead the Spartans’ otherwise stagnant offense to a clutch score with just under 30 seconds left. He struggled with his down-field passing outside of the first drive which resulted in a touchdown, but his short and intermediate routes were on target.

If this loss to the Wildcats in triple-overtime tells us anything about Michigan State moving forward, it’s that the staff can rely more on Lewerke. Once he figures out how to get touch on his 20-plus yard throws, he’s going to be tough to stop.
