4. Depth at wide receiver is evident

If there was one thing that was obvious about the Spartans’ offense on Saturday, it was that the depth at wide receiver could carry this unit. Brian Lewerke has the arm talent and dual-threat ability to keep the offense moving down the field, but his confidence seemed to be lacking through three-plus quarters.

In the fourth, the depth at receiver brought him back from the brink. A 34-yard completion on third-and-nine from Lewerke to Cody White set up a crucial late score to put Michigan State up 17-9 and force the Hoosiers to attempt to drive the whole field to tie it up.

That big catch and run by White wasn’t his first, though. He had six catches for 99 yards on the day and looked as sure-handed as anyone out there. He knew how to make plays and he helped out his struggling quarterback when it mattered.

White wasn’t the only receiver who helped Lewerke out when he needed it, but Hunter Rison had a couple of big catches, Felton Davis II had the go-ahead touchdown reception and Darrell Stewart Jr. was solid. The youth, and depth, is paying dividends for the Spartans.
