1. Michigan State is a serious College Football Playoff contender

Too soon to even discuss the College Football Playoff. Why? Because the Spartans need to beat contenders like Penn State or Ohio State in order to be recognized as true playoff threats. It’s possible, though. Michigan State always plays the Buckeyes tough and the Spartans get Penn State at home.

At the beginning of November, we should have a much better idea of who is a true College Football Playoff contender and who is a year or two off. Michigan State is still very young and this team has plenty to fix if it wants to compete with the Clemsons and Alabamas of the college football world.

It’s too early to count them out of contention, though. Like I said, this team controls its own destiny and if Michigan State were to win out, beat Penn State and Ohio State, and win the Big Ten title over a team like Wisconsin, there’s no way it could be left out of the playoff.

At least six games into the year, this is still a possibility. After six games last season, Michigan State was 2-4 and making a bowl was barely even an option. The Spartans aren’t playoff contenders yet, but they might be a couple of big wins away from that point.
