2. Spartans’ defense is elite

It’s back, folks. Michigan State’s defense looks to be the real deal, although John O’Korn isn’t exactly a Heisman-caliber quarterback. The Spartans made him uncomfortable in the pocket all night and forced a number of errant throws, which led to three picks and a completion rate of under 50 percent.

Moreover, there may not be a better linebacker in the Big Ten right now than Joe Bachie. The sophomore middle linebacker has been phenomenal this season and had the game of his career on Saturday night. He rose to the occasion and led the team with 10 tackles, a sack, a pass deflection and an interception. He’s the real deal.

Andrew Dowell and Chris Frey also played well at the linebacker spots.

On the defensive line, Kenny Willekes stood out with three tackles for loss, two sacks and nine total takedowns. He was disruptive at the defensive end position all game long.

In the secondary, David Dowell had his coming out party with two interceptions, a defended pass and seven tackles. Khari Willis also had 10 tackles and played aggressively all game long. Josiah Scott locked down Donovan Peoples-Jones, a former blue-chip recruit. Lastly, Justin Layne made some big plays and forced a crucial fumble before halftime.

This defense is becoming truly elite.
