2. Brian Lewerke is more effective with legs than his arm

This one will soon be filed under “freezing cold takes” because of the fact that Brian Lewerke has been solid through the air this season. Sure, for a first-year starter, the sophomore has made some silly mistakes and often over and under-throws receivers, but that’s expected.

Following the win over Michigan, Lewerke finished with 61 rushing yards and 94 passing yards. He struggled to get anything going through the air in the second half, well, because the Spartans barely passed the ball. He finished 11-for-22 with a touchdown, but could have easily been 14-of-22 or better thanks to a few drops by Spartan receivers, tight ends.

Was he more effective with his legs than his arm on Saturday? Yes, because he had to be. The Spartans needed him to scramble for some first downs in the torrential downpour when passing wasn’t an option, and he did. He kept Michigan on its toes because of his running ability.

To say Lewerke is more effective on the ground than through the air is incorrect. He keeps defenses honest, which is a plus, but he can also sling the ball with confidence when he needs to. Don’t discount this kid’s arm.
