3. Joe Bachie is the Big Ten’s best defender

If you watched Saturday night’s game against Michigan, you’d realize one thing: Joe Bachie is the real deal. The sophomore middle linebacker had the best game of his young career and had a hand in every play the Wolverines ran, it seemed.

Bachie finished with a team-high 10 tackles and a sack with that one tackle for loss — although it seemed like he had more than just that one takedown behind the line of scrimmage. He was in on most run plays and even had an interception and pass deflection.

After the game, some fans were talking about Bachie being the Big Ten’s best defender. It was definitely a talk that was warranted following the performance, but it’s too early to tell. There are guys at Wisconsin who beg to differ, along with Iowa’s Josey Jewell and about 4-5 guys in Michigan’s front-seven.

It would be an interesting debate, but let the season play out before dubbing him the Big Ten’s top defender. Heck, the Spartan defense is riddled with guys who could fight for that distinction: Josiah Scott, Khari Willis, Chris Frey, David and Andrew Dowell.
