Michigan State football picked up a big win over Iowa in East Lansing during a Week 5 win. Now it’s time to overreact.

For the second time in three years, Michigan State football met up with Iowa and played the Hawkeyes to a fierce defensive battle that came down to the wire. The Spartans held a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and took a 17-7 lead at the half. Iowa would only add a field goal in the final two quarters, ending Iowa’s hope for a comeback.

Michigan State’s victory was a big one as it tied the Spartans’ win total from a year ago. There are still eight games to be played in order for the Spartans to finish with 6-7 wins and bowl eligibility which would be big coming off a disastrous 3-9 campaign.

The Spartans won their first Big Ten contest of the season and fans loved it. Fans overreacted accordingly, and we took away the five biggest potential overreactions for our “Overreaction Monday” special.

Let’s take a look at the five overreactions from Saturday’s win over the Hawkeyes.

5. Best linebackers in the Big Ten

Michigan State’s linebackers are good. This much we do know after four games. The Spartans have been relying heavily on those guys in the middle of the defense to do the heavy lifting.

Joe Bachie may very well end up being the best middle linebacker since Max Bullough or Greg Jones. He has proven himself worthy of major praise through five weeks and he led the team with nine tackles on Saturday evening along with 3.5 for loss, a sack and a huge fumble recovery late.

Chris Frey is a leader and arguably an All-Big Ten talent. He had five tackles and just plays a disruptive, fast-paced game.

Andrew Dowell is athletic and he moves sideline-to-sideline as well as anyone on the team. He doesn’t get enough praise for how consistent he is. Is this the best linebacking corps in the Big Ten? It’s way too early to claim that, but it’s definitely top-tier.
