Michigan State Football: 10 bold predictions for 2017 Big Ten play
4. Josiah Scott named Big Ten Freshman of the Year
If you’ve been paying attention to the first month of the year, you’d realize that Josiah Scott is one of the best defensive backs on the roster. Heck, he may be the best defensive back as he’s excelled in his first three games as a collegiate athlete.
It’s not easy for true freshmen to excel at the college level, especially when they were so underrated out of high school, but Scott is doing just that. He looks to be one of the top defenders in the conference through three games and isn’t letting anyone beat him deep — or get short passes against him, for that matter.

Through the first three games of the season, Scott has allowed a passer rating of just 2.8 when he’s been targeted. That’s an incredible feat for a kid who has only been on campus since January. He’s taking over as a shutdown corner in the conference and the league is taking notice.
The last, and only, Michigan State player to win Big Ten Freshman of the Year was Reggie Garnett, a middle linebacker, in 1993. Scott will change that this year.
