9. Joe Bachie reaches 100-tackle mark by Maryland game

In just his second year with the Spartans, sophomore linebacker Joe Bachie looks to be the real deal. Filling in for Riley Bullough, who replaced his older brother Max Bullough, came with some major responsibilities and some wondered if he could adequately fill those shoes.

In limited time last season and during the spring game, it was evident: Bachie had what it took. Dantonio went as far as to say he’s nailed down the starting middle linebacker job. That’s not easy for a sophomore to do on a team that has depth at Mike linebacker — such as Byron Bullough and Shane Jones.

Through three games this season, Bachie has 25 tackles. He finished with 10 against Bowling Green, 11 versus Western Michigan and just four against Notre Dame. Is it because he can’t defend as well against top-tier teams? No, he was fighting through leg cramps all night and was forced out.

Bachie is one of the best linebackers in the Big Ten against the run and he will be looked at to be that force in the middle. He will reach the 100-tackle plateau by the Maryland game (second-to-last game of the year) and potentially hit 115-120 on the season. Not bad for a sophomore.
