While his play may have gone unnoticed to the casual observer, Michigan State football’s Josiah Scott opened some eyes in Week 1.

To the casual observer, Josiah Scott’s debut in the green and white was nothing spectacular. Michigan State football’s star-in-the-making at cornerback played in a rotation with Josh Butler and didn’t allow any big plays down the field — which is always a win.

Big plays have hurt the Spartans’ secondary in years past, but against Bowling Green, nothing of the sort took place. Scott locked onto opposing receivers and didn’t let anyone behind him.

Sure, he could have been flagged a couple of times for being overly-aggressive, but that’s what made Darqueze Dennard and Trae Waynes so great. Nothing comes easy against him, and Pro Football Focus took notice of his performance.

In face, it rated him the top-performing freshman in the country in the opening week of play.

The folks over at PFF do an exceptional job of breaking down film and really diving into the specifics of each player’s performance. There’s a wide range of athletes on that list, from running back to defensive back and everything in between.

Mark Dantonio landed Scott last fall and he enrolled at Michigan State in January. As one of the few early enrollees, he had the opportunity to prove himself early on in spring ball. He did just that. He looked great in the spring game and Dantonio even dubbed him a starter.

Although Butler started in the opener over him, he will be in that rotation all season long and it could help bring back the “No Fly Zone” to East Lansing.
