3. Felton Davis III leads team in receiving

There’s no doubt about it, Felton Davis III has what it takes to be the team’s top receiver this season, but he has failed to live up to expectations over the past two years. As a freshman, he caught just two passes for 50 yards — although they were two big catches in crucial games.

Davis III’s sophomore year was disappointing after a nice start. He was expected to be a solid No. 2 receiver behind R.J. Shelton, but didn’t quite follow through. He had just 12 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. He had six catches for 94 yards and a score in his first six games and fizzled out in the season’s second half.

The junior receiver is poised to lead this young group of wide outs and he could be the next Spartan to break out as the top target after a quiet start to his career. In fact, Mark Dantonio has had multiple guys who were created in that mold — Tony Lippett and Aaron Burbridge, to name a couple.

The Virginia-native is going to lead the team in receiving despite many believing Trishton Jackson will run away with the team’s receiving yardage lead. He will break 12 receptions in the first month with 285 yards and three touchdowns. Not a bad start to the year.
