Michigan State football has extended a scholarship offer to three-star Naples, Fla., running back DeMarcus Townsend.

Mark Dantonio is still looking for that first running back commitment in his 2018 recruiting class, but there’s a long way to go until signing day. Michigan State football missed out on a running back in its 2016 class and landed only one in 2017, making it imperative to reel in two for 2018.

Elijah Collins (a three-star from Detroit), Harold Joiner (a four-star from Alabama) and Ronnie Walker (a four-star from Virginia) are the three top targets for the position right now, and the Spartans are in good shape with each. Still, Dantonio can’t be content with that.

In fact, he offered three-star Naples, Fla., running back DeMarcus Townsend on Tuesday.

Townsend isn’t the biggest guy on the field, but he certainly doesn’t go down easily. Just watch his highlights and see for yourself.

The 5-foot-10, 192-pound back from Florida is almost like a pinball when he meets a defender. He bounces off, looks for the next opening and makes a run for it. He’s strong and the fact that he can break tackles with ease despite being an undersized guy proves that.

Arm tackles just aren’t going to bring this kid down, and that’s what Dantonio loves when it comes to running back targets. He likes bigger guys, but there have been some smaller MSU backs — Edwin Baker and Nick Hill — who were just strong and didn’t go down easily.

Townsend is listed as the No. 646 overall recruit and the 31st-best running back in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports‘ rankings. He holds offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Mississippi State, Tennessee, UCLA and USF as well.
