Three-star 2018 Michigan State football cornerback commit Davion Williams could try his hand at dual-sport stardom in East Lansing.

There have been few successful dual-sport stars in Michigan State football history. The most successful, however, happened to go on to play professional baseball for the Tigers and Dodgers. That was Kirk Gibson, an All-American wide receiver for the Spartans in the 1970s.

Over the years, more recently, guys like Matt Trannon and Dion Sims have given it a try. Trannon was more successful while Sims was better suited to play football and ended up hanging up the sneakers after less than a season — that happened to be the right move as he’s now a solid NFL tight end.

It hasn’t been attempted, or even thought of, in a few years, but a recent Michigan State football pledge for the class of 2018 is considering dual-sport stardom in East Lansing.

Belleville cornerback Davion Williams, a three-star, just picked up high school football last year and is already making waves. He’s listed as the No. 36 cornerback in the country and eighth-best in-state prospect, according to 247Sports.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound pledge of Mark Dantonio’s squad recently rose in the ranks, jumping to the No. 357 recruit in the class. He’s athletic, long and speedy which makes sense when it comes to his basketball prowess. Heck, he’s the No. 126 basketball recruit in the 2018 class and fourth-best in Michigan, per 247Sports, as a four-star.

According to an interview with David Goricki of The Detroit News, Williams believes he could play two sports at Michigan State.

"“It doesn’t get any better than that,” Williams told The Detroit News in a phone interview Friday afternoon. “He (Izzo) said I’d have a spot on the team, offering me the chance to play basketball, which is definitely a love of mine.”"

Not many kids get the opportunity to play two sports at the collegiate level, especially for a program like Michigan State which has quality football and basketball, but Williams has the opportunity in front of him.

Don’t be surprised if he gives basketball a try at the next level for Tom Izzo. The Spartans need wing depth and Williams is a quality shooting guard.
