According to a recent CBS Sports ranking, Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio’s job is essentially as safe as it gets.

When you take a step back and observe Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio’s full body of work over the past 10 years, you realize just how much he’s meant to this program. The Spartans were one of the laughing stocks of the Big Ten before him, but since he’s been in place, Michigan State has been on the rise.

However, that was halted during the 2016 season. Michigan State finished just 3-9 and multiple off-field incidents took place during and after the season which led to players being suspended and kicked off the team.

Moreover, there were many transfers from the program and good news was hard to come by. It’s been one of the worst years in Michigan State football history — offseason included — and that’s led to some questioning the job security of the man in charge.

Dantonio has a handful of 11-win seasons in the past six years and even brought Michigan State its first Rose Bowl victory in over 20 years back in 2013. Unfortunately, we are all victims of long-term memory loss when it comes to sports. This is a ‘what have you done for me lately?’ business.

CBS Sports isn’t questioning Dantonio’s job security, though. Dennis Dodd rated all 130 FBS coaches based on their job security on a 0-5 scale. Zero means that the coach has no chance of being fired and five means they must win now or face termination following the 2017 season.

Few coaches received ‘0’ ratings, while a number of them got ‘1’ which means that their job is “safe and secure”. One of the coaches to receive a ‘1’ was Dantonio.

While there are many opposing fans knocking the Spartan head coach, he has brought more success to the program than any coach in decades. He’s handled all of the in-season and offseason trials and tribulations perfectly, proving that he’s still the right guy to lead the program.
