Michigan State football made the cut for three-star 2018 wide receiver Taj Mustapha from West Bloomfield, Mich.

In-state recruiting has become more important by the year for Michigan State football, and the 2018 class is no exception. The Spartans recently made the cut for three-star West Bloomfield wide receiver Taj Mustapha on Wednesday.

Although he’s not considered one of the elite players in the class, or even in the state, he has tremendous upside. He recently received an offer from the Spartans and named them in his top five.

Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Iowa. It’s clear that he wants to stay in the Midwest, more specifically the Big Ten, but Kentucky has been trying to poach Michigan recruits for some time.

Mustapha does, however, have ties to the Michigan State football program. His former teammate, Trishton Jackson, is entering his sophomore year with the Spartans and he’s expected to be the leading receiver in the fall.

The West Bloomfield-native held 20 offers, many from smaller programs, but he seems to be a valuable asset in Big Ten country.

Michigan State offered the 6-foot-2, 175-pound wide out on May 29, but Kentucky was the last program to extend a scholarship (June 9). He has tremendous concentration with the ball in the air and despite not towering over opponents, he seems to love those jump balls.

The Spartans are hoping to land the in-state target. He’s listed as the No. 867 overall recruit and 137th-best receiver in the 2018 class, according to 247Sports.
