Michigan State football lost another player to transfer as former four-star safety Kenney Lyke has left the program.

For the second time in a week, Michigan State lost another player via transfer. Over the weekend, Kenney Lyke announced he’d be heading the JUCO route for next season, hoping to eventually get a shot with an SEC program.

Earlier in the week, it was announced that sophomore defensive back and receiver Kaleel Gaines would be leaving the program and also taking the JUCO route in Arizona. The reasoning behind that transfer is still unclear, but it could be due to the loaded defensive backfield and receiving corps.

Lyke was one of the top safeties in the 2016 recruiting class and was considering Notre Dame and Oregon, but picked the Spartans. He reigns from Palatine, Ill., and was considered a threat to contend for playing time in 2017 with both Demetrious Cox and Montae Nicholson departing.

It’s tough to grasp the amount of attrition this offseason, but it could be good news for the Spartans in 2017. The locker room chemistry in 2016 seemed to be off and not saying Lyke was a reason for that, but some of the departures have been for the best.

Mark Dantonio replaced Lyke on Saturday with a three-star defensive back named Shakur Brown who committed late in the 2017 class.
