Now we are getting into the guys who are almost already considered All-Big Ten performers, per preseason lists. Athlon Sports even named Chris Frey to their All-Big Ten third-team this week, making him one of three Spartans on the list.

More from Spartans Football

During his freshman season, Frey became known as a special teams star. As a sophomore, he gradually shifted from special teams to rotational linebacker but truly broke out at the position in his junior year. Although 2016 wasn’t good to the Spartans as a whole, Frey had his breakout season.

Frey recorded 96 total tackles, four tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks in 2016. He led the team in total tackles and was fifth in tackles for loss. He shined in the absence of Jon Reschke and came into his own as a vocal leader. Players began looking up to him and he proved his worth week in and week out with solid, consistent play.

Returning for his senior year, his expectations are at an all-time high. He has added weight and muscle throughout his MSU career and is beginning to look like a potential first or second-team All-Big Ten backer. This could truly be his year to prove himself as the conference’s best.
