Michigan State recruiting may no longer be in the mix for five-star small forward Brian Bowen, according to reports.

The Brian Bowen saga continues. Just a few months ago, the five-star small forward from Saginaw, Mich., was talking up his top schools such as Michigan State, Arizona and Creighton. Now, he’s looking at a completely different group, according to reports.

CBS Sports‘ Jon Rothstein reported that Texas has emerged as a legitimate contender for Bowen while programs such as UCLA, Oregon, DePaul and Creighton are in the mix.

That must mean that previous favorites such as Michigan State and Arizona are out. While this is a bit surprising given the fact that he grew up around the Spartan program and is a relative of MSU great Jason Richardson, if he hadn’t picked the green and white by now, it wasn’t going to happen.

Bowen has been regarded as one of the top uncommitted prospects in the class and he’s on the clock now that guys like Kevin Knox and Mo Bamba have committed. With Bamba at Texas now, Bowen’s interest in the Longhorns isn’t surprising.

Shaka Smart is a solid, young coach who appeals to recruits and has the resources to be an elite recruiter in Austin. Bowen’s interest in Texas isn’t new, but it’s growing.

With the new schools emerging, it’s likely that Michigan State has withdrawn from the race, holding onto an extra scholarship for 2018.
