Michigan State recruiting is awaiting the decision, who has set an announcement date, from top 2018 safety target Michael Dowell from Ohio.

Mark Dantonio missed out on one of the top Michigan State defensive targets for the 2018 class last month when Malik Vann committed to Cincinnati. The decision was a shock, but there’s another announcement coming that would be an even bigger surprise.

According to his Twitter, three-star safety Michael Dowell is gearing up to make his college decision on May 29. He’s the brother of current Spartans Andrew and David Dowell and it’d be quite the shock if he didn’t pick the Spartans.

Dowell’s offer sheet includes the likes of Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Iowa, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt and Western Michigan. The Spartans are the clear frontrunner to land him just over two weeks before his announcement.

It’s been assumed that he’d be choosing MSU because of his brothers being on campus already and his budding relationship with the coaching staff. He has been comfortable visiting East Lansing multiple times and the Lakewood, Ohio, native would mark the fourth commit from Ohio in the 2018 class — there would be six total pledges.

The three-star from Ohio is ranked the No. 351 overall recruit and 28th-best safety in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports‘ composite. The Spartans could use some extra depth at safety with both starters departing following the 2016 season. David Dowell may just be starting in 2017.
