Michigan State recruiting missed on four-star point guard Tyger Campbell who was one of the Spartans’ top targets.

The future for Michigan State basketball is bright. The Spartans’ 2017 and 2018 classes have taken shape nicely, but one major target from 2019 has decided to pursue a collegiate career elsewhere in the Midwest. Four-star point guard Tyger Campbell has picked DePaul.

While there had been rumblings that Michigan State had been fading in his recruitment, it still came as a surprise that he picked the Blue Demons. However, his last two unofficial visits were to DePaul and that was all the Blue Demons needed to reel him in.

Well, that and his former coach at La Lumiere Shane Heirman who took the job as an assistant for DePaul just last week and the hire is already paying dividends. In fact, DePaul is hoping to bring in Brian Bowen, Campbell’s La Lumiere teammate and top MSU target, as well.

Campbell has announced that he’s likely going to reclassify to 2018, which makes the move less surprising. Foster Loyer is the Spartans’ point guard option in the class and there’s reason to believe that Campbell would be the odd man out in a Cassius Winston/Loyer rotation.

DePaul got a good one, though, and that’s big for the program which hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament in over a decade. Could he be the force that helps turn things around? The nation’s 25th-best recruit, according to the 247Sports‘ composite, is a huge get for the Blue Demons.
