Michigan State Recruiting: Spartans back in mix for 4-star DB Kalon Gervin?
Michigan State recruiting should be back in the mix for four-star defensive back Kalon Gervin who just de-committed from Notre Dame.
When Kalon Gervin committed to Notre Dame, it seemed like he had been wanting to for a while. He seemed content and even though Michigan State had him high on its board, the Spartans had to respect his decision and back off.

However, he decided late last week to reopen his recruitment and de-commit from Notre Dame. It was a surprise move, but opened the door, once again, for the Spartans.
Gervin spoke to Tom Loy of 247Sports about his de-commitment.
"“It’s just, I have to do what’s best for me right now,” said Gervin. “Some stuff kind of fell off a little bit with the coaches. That fell off sometimes. But, honestly, right now, it’s what’s good for me. I thought I’d back off and see what’s better.”"
It seems like the relationship he had with the coaching staff deteriorated over time. Brian Kelly didn’t put in the work to keep him aboard and he can’t expect to forget about certain commits if he wants to retain them.
There were two promising quotes from the Loy story from Gervin and one was about how everyone assumed he was going to end up at Michigan since a lot of Cass Tech grads do. He said that the Wolverines’ staff didn’t really reach out to him much, though.
The other promising quote was about interest in Michigan State.
"“I’m probably going to hit up Virginia Tech again,” said Gervin. “Florida. Oklahoma. I’m probably going to hit up Michigan State. I don’t really know right now. I don’t really know where I’m headed right now. There’s a bunch of schools. I really don’t know where my head’s at right now.”"
Being one of four schools that he mentioned he wanted to reach out to soon is a definite positive for the Spartans. Mark Dantonio may have a second crack at landing one of the nation’s top 2018 defensive backs.

It was surprising to see him de-commit from Notre Dame, but the Spartans are back in the race for the nation’s No. 160 overall recruit and fifth-best prospect from Michigan, according to 247Sports.
