Michigan State recruiting added the son of Chicago Bulls’ head coach Fred Hoiberg, Jack Hoiberg, as a walk-on for 2017.

While Tom Izzo and his coaching staff are out making their final rounds before their top three targets announce, Michigan State has added to its 2017 class. Over the weekend, point guard Jack Hoiberg, son of Chicago Bulls’ head coach Fred Hoiberg, committed to Michigan State as a walk-on.

No, it’s not the commitment everyone was hoping for, but the Spartans need walk-ons anyways to fill out the bench. Former walk-on Matt Van Dyk is departing, and we all saw how he earned some playing time come his senior year.

Although the Spartans will be loaded next season, the 5-foot-9 point guard from Hinsdale, Ill., will provide some much-needed help during practices. Walk-ons are more important than people truly think.

Hoiberg lived in Ames before moving with his family to Chicago after his dad took the job with the Bulls. He averaged 15 points per game as a senior, but according to Jeremy Warnemuende of 247Sports, he had accepted a scholarship to play golf at South Dakota.

The younger Hoiberg put that on hold to pursue his dream of playing basketball at the Division 1 level. He likely won’t see the floor much during his career, but learning from a Hall of Fame coach and staying close to home is tough to say ‘no’ to.

Michigan State will still be looking to add 1-2 guys to its 2017 recruiting class. Mark Smith, Brandon McCoy and Brian Bowen are all in the mix.
