Michigan State recruiting may not need to wait much longer to hear four-star point guard Mark Smith’s decision.

Jumping in this late in the recruiting process hasn’t exactly done Michigan State any favors in years past, but the Spartans are hoping to land a gem in the 2017 class. Mark Smith is one of the most intriguing prospects left on the board and Tom Izzo is strongly pursuing him.

The Spartans have been looking to add another guard/wing in the 2017 class and there are two remaining possibilities: Brian Bowen and Smith.

Bowen was long considered ‘the guy’ who the Spartans would target in 2017, but he has since drifted. He looks to be leaning toward either Creighton or Arizona as the Spartans have set their sights on Smith.

The four-star guard from Edwardsville, Ill., was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois and has been receiving a ton of interest lately. In fact, Kentucky is one of the team to throw its name in the hat recently and the Wildcats are expecting to get a visit from Smith this week.

However, that may not be his last visit before making a decision.

Being from the state of Illinois, it makes sense that he would use an unofficial on the Illini and officials for schools further away. Still, do the Illini make for the biggest threats to swipe Smith from the Spartans? It looks that way.

Per that tweet, we can expect a decision to come as soon as next week. The Spartans may not have to play the waiting game much longer.
