Michigan State recruiting is reportedly getting a major official visit from four-star Mark Smith within the next two weeks.

Jumping in this late for a top-tier recruit is never an guaranteed thing, but Tom Izzo is putting in the necessary work to make an impression on four-star Mark Smith. The point guard from Edwardsville, Ill., is one of the top uncommitted prospects for 2017 and Michigan State wants him.

Why did it take the Spartans so long to jump into the race? Well, Izzo may not have known where he stood with guys like Greg Elliott and Brian Bowen, but after gathering some intel, he may have pulled the trigger on Smith. He offered Illinois’ Mr. Basketball on Tuesday.

Now, it seems like Smith is planning an official visit to Michigan State with his family within the next couple of weeks before his decision.

There were conflicting reports on Twitter regarding a potential visit during the dead period, but it was confirmed by multiple insiders. While no one truly knows when he will take a trip to East Lansing, Ryan Evan (the above source) is confident it will happen before a possible April 12 decision.

Being offered by Michigan State this late in the process and then planning a trip to East Lansing with family must mean that the interest is that intense for both sides. Illinois seemed like the favorite to land him until the Spartans got involved.

Smith is ranked the No. 92 player in the class and the 20th-best point guard, although he’s 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, according to 247Sports. He could be the next Denzel Valentine-type player.
