Now that the book is closed on the 2017 Michigan State recruiting class, Mark Dantonio and the rest of the coaching staff are focused on the 2018 cycle. Off to a nice start already, the Spartans learned that they made the top schools list of four-star safety Kwantel Raines from Aliquippa, Penn.

The Spartans offered him last May when Dave Warner paid him a visit and his film speaks for itself. He’s got to be one of the most agile prospects in the class and his athleticism is coveted by a number of top-tier programs.
Also making the list of top schools are Wisconsin, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, TCU, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Maryland, LSU, Louisville, Kentucky, Iowa State, Florida and California. Michigan State is one of four Big Ten programs on the list.
Raines is one of the most versatile defensive prospects in the class, especially because he can play the offensive side of the ball and excel. In fact, he plays some quarterback for Aliquippa High and his film proves how athletic he is, dodging tackles and hurdling would-be tacklers.
The four-star safety from Pennsylvania has some impressive speed and isn’t afraid to come up and make plays. He reminds me of a young Montae Nicholson who was praised for his athleticism and playmaking ability on the defensive side of the ball. If he were to pick Michigan State, he would likely be experimented with on offense, too.
