Despite the recent pledge, Michigan State recruiting lost the commitment of four-star receiver Joseph Scates from Ohio.

Just about a month after committing to Michigan State, four-star Dayton, Ohio, wide receiver Joseph Scates has decided to reopen his recruiting process. This comes as a small surprise to those who had been following his recruitment over the past couple of weeks.

It seemed as if he was showing signs of having second thoughts, but he had remained a verbal pledge until Tuesday evening when he posted on Twitter that he would be opening his recruitment back up.

What makes this even less surprising was the fact that he visited Alabama over the weekend and received an offer from the Crimson Tide, along with his teammate Tavion Thomas. The visit seemed to open some eyes as Mark Dantonio usually has a strict no-visit policy for his commits.

Scates is a tough loss for the Spartans’ 2018 class, especially since they picked up a pledge from four-star quarterback Theo Day over the weekend who could have used him as a weapon. That doesn’t mean he’s completely out of the question in the 2018 class for MSU, though.

The four-star wide receiver is ranked No. 129 in the 2018 class as well as the 23rd-best receiver, according to the 247Sports‘ composite. Ohio State and Alabama seem to be the top contenders in his recruitment now.

We will see if Dantonio makes his recommitment a priority or if he’s cutting this one loose.
