Tyler Johnson is a legacy recruit. The son of former Spartan defensive lineman Bill Johnson, who was drafted in the third round of the 1992 NFL Draft, Mark Dantonio will try to keep the green blood in the family.

Although Michigan State already has a tight end commit and another one who’s very close to giving his pledge, it seems, Tyler looks to be a prospect that the staff just can’t pass on, especially if he’s interested.

Once listed as a receiver, the 6-foot-4, 245-pound recruit from Arizona is now considered a tight end, and one of the best in the class. However, with that size, it’s not unfathomable that Dantonio could switch his position so he sees the field to maybe a defensive lineman or even an offensive lineman — he’s done the same with Cole Chewins and Kyonta Stallworth.

Right now, Johnson holds 14 offers, but the Spartans seem to be the one peaking his interest the most. When you’re raised in a household that favors a particular program, it’s easy to become a fan of that school — it looks like this is the case.

Johnson is ranked the No. 237 overall prospect as well as sixth-best tight end in the 2017 class, according to 247Sports. He holds other offers from Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Pitt, Tennessee, UCLA, USC and Washington, among others.
