28. Feed the ducks

Wildlife enthusiasts may tell you not to feed the ducks near the rapids on the Red Cedar, but if you have small children and are looking for some time to kill before the football game, take them to the south side of the river across from the library.

There’s a small set of stairs to take you right next to the water where the ducks hang out and bring a few pieces of break. It’s an insignificant act, but your child will love it and it’s likely going to be one of their first, and best, memories of Michigan State.

Looking back, this is the one thing I loved to do as a kid before games because, first of all, I couldn’t sit still. Second, watching the ducks chase after the little pieces of bread was awesome. Lastly, spending time doing something so seemingly small can make your son/daughter grow up to love the school that you attended or are a huge fan of.

Don’t get too close to the ducks, though, because they get so dependent on that bread that they might just come to you before you get to them.

Next time you bring your child to a football game or even a weekend basketball game, head to the Red Cedar and feed those hungry ducks.
