Michigan State Football: 10 potential 2017 NFL Draft picks
Just two years ago, Ed Davis was a first-year starter, earning himself honorable mention All-Big Ten honors, working his way up to a potentially monstrous senior year.
As a junior, Davis racked up 58 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks to go along with two passes defended and a forced fumble. He looked like one of the top pass-rushing linebackers in the Big Ten and he earned himself a guaranteed starting spot for the 2015 season.
That was, until he suffered a torn ACL in fall camp which forced him out for the entire season and likely ended his career as a Spartan. However, he has applied for and will be granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA and that news could not be any better for both sides.
Although he started 12 out of 13 games at Sam linebacker as a junior, he might have to move over to the Star linebacker position because of Jon Reschke’s emergence, bumping promising sophomore Andrew Dowell out of the starting group.
If Davis can put together another All-Big Ten season and shows that his knee isn’t a bother, NFL teams could look at him as a perfect blitz package linebacker with athleticism to see the field often. He has nice size at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds and could be a fifth or sixth-rounder.
