Michigan State Football: Predicting depth chart following spring game
‘Sam’ Linebacker
Projected Starter: Jon Reschke, Junior
As stated on the ‘Star’ linebacker slide, Ed Davis could be taking over the ‘Sam’ and moving Reschke over to the ‘Star’ if that’s what Coach D sees fit. However, Reschke started in place of the injured linebacker last season, beating out guys like T.J. Harrell, Shane Jones and Chris Frey. The sophomore got better throughout the season, recording 75 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.
Backup: Chris Frey, Junior
Chris Frey is one of those freak players who always seems to find a way to be part of every play. He hustles to the whistle every time and he’s a nightmare for opponents. With that being said, he will likely play the role of backup to either Davis or Reschke, earning major minutes when each of them need a breather. This kid has starting potential, but is waiting his turn.
Reserve: Tyriq Thompson, Freshman (RS)
Tyriq Thompson is another guy who will be the starter at linebacker a couple years down the line. There’s no way he cuts ahead of both Reschke and Frey, but he will see the field for his first action in a Spartan uniform in 2016. This is a name to know for next year and beyond.
Next: Cornerback
