Not too long ago, it seemed like the Spartans had next to no shot to wrestle Jaylen Kelly-Powell away from Michigan. No, he’s not committed to the Wolverines, but he’s been leaning that way for quite some time, it seems. Having Curtis Blackwell on the staff definitely helps Michigan State with the Detroit-area kids since he used to be a high school coach in the city.

Kelly-Powell is looking at the Spartans in a whole new light now that he holds an offer, which he received back on February 10 — he planned a visit to East Lansing just a week later.

Offering a kid and then having him visit right after is a great sign, and that shows that Kelly-Powell does have some interest in Michigan State, after all. The 2017 four-star safety from Cass Tech happens to be teammates with 2016 safety pledge Demetric Vance. The two could team up at Michigan State and finish what they started at the prep level.

Dantonio has made a concerted effort to dip his hand into the Detroit cookie jar in recent years and came away with two of the best last season, looking to have the same luck in 2017. It could start with Kelly-Powell.

The junior safety from the state title runner-up ranks as the 133rd overall prospect and the No. 13 safety. He is also the third-best prep player in Michigan and holds nearly 40 offers, including ones from Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame.
