2. Lorenzo White

We are down to the final two and this one should come as no surprise since Lorenzo White is the best running back in school history. You knew he was bound to be mentioned on the list of the greatest Spartan running backs of all time.

Few Michigan State rushers have come close to passing up White on the all-time list, but he still remains the top dog in terms of Spartan running backs and it’s hard to beat the numbers he put up over his career — along with MSU’s first Rose Bowl win in three decades.

White is first in just about every rushing category in Michigan State history including rushing attempts (1,082), yards (4,887), touchdowns (43), rushing attempts in a season (419), rushing yards in a season (2,066) and rushing yards per game in a season (172.2). He has proven to be one of the most electric backs in school history.

Lorenzo’s best season came in 1985 when he finished with a school record of 2,066 yards on the ground as a sophomore along with 17 touchdowns, finishing fourth in Heisman voting. He finished fourth after his senior season in Heisman balloting as well, racking up over 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns in 1987 — the Rose Bowl season.

The two-time All-American was chosen No. 22 overall in the 1988 NFL Draft and played seven seasons for the Houston Oilers and one for the Browns.
