At just 24 years of age, Harry Kipke took over the Michigan State football program — something you would never hear of nowadays. The young head coach led the Spartans as the head coach for just a single season before going back to his alma mater, and in-state rival, Michigan.
Before coaching at Michigan State, Kipke was one of the better athletes of his time. He played football, basketball and baseball and ended up coaching both baseball and football following his playing days.
One of Kipke’s most memorable games during his short one-year tenure as the Spartans’ head coach was his 103-0 blowout victory over Kalamazoo College in the first year of Spartan Stadium. Back in 1923, the university finally introduced the stadium and it has stood ever since.
Little do many fans know that a lopsided win such as this one actually took place inside the walls of their beloved field.
Sure, Kalamazoo College wasn’t exactly a powerhouse football program, but a 103-0 victory is impressive no matter who you’re playing — and yes, I’m including St. Mary’s School for the Blind in that statement.
