This had to have been the best game in Michigan State football history just because of the name alone. Known as “The Game of the Century” back in 1966, the Spartans and Notre Dame Fighting Irish were playing for some major chips. Everything was on the line as both teams entered the game unbeaten; Michigan State was 9-0 and Notre Dame was 8-0.

As one of the best teams in Michigan State history, the 1966 Michigan State squad hosted top-ranked Notre Dame with a chance to prove its national supremacy. The Spartans came out hot, putting up a 10-0 lead right before halftime only to watch Notre Dame score to make it 10-7 heading into the locker room.
Who would have thought that there would be only one more score for the rest of the game and the best contest in Michigan State football history would end in a tie? I mean, it’s so unsatisfying to watch a game end in a tie, but that’s exactly how great this game was — both teams deserved to win and neither deserved a loss.

A Notre Dame field goal in the fourth quarter tied it for good, but controversy ensued when legendary Irish head coach Ara Parseghian decided to just run out the clock instead of score on his final possession. Still, though, what an amazing game this was as both teams shared the national title in 1966.
