Safety(1): Lynn Chandnois
Another guy who holds multiple records at Michigan State, Lynn Chandnois is a named you probably wouldn’t recognize if you were born in the 1990s like me. Luckily for you guys, I have done my research and have found nothing but solid stats contributing to his spot on this list as the No. 1 safety on the All-Michigan State Football team.
Heck, you might not even know this name if you were born in the 1970s as Chandnois played from 1946-49 for Charlie Bachman in his final season as head coach and then at the beginning of Biggie Munn’s tenure.
Not only did Chandnois play defense, but he was also a running back and a top-notch returner, even finishing second all-time to Gale Sayers in kickoff return average in the NFL — that’s some good company to be in.
In 1949, Chandnois was named an All-American and was a well-respected man even before he came to Michigan State as he joined the United States Naval Air Corps out of high school for two years. Nearly 70 years later and Chandnois still owns the Michigan State all-time interceptions record, with 20, and also No. 1 in school history in interception return yards (410).
Chandnois was drafted eighth overall in 1950 and two years later he was named the NFL Player of the Year. He was also named to two Pro Bowls.
It might be a while before his 20 career interceptions are topped.
