One intangible that is in Michigan State’s favor is its familiarity with big games in recent years. This is Michigan State’s third trip to the Big Ten Championship in the past five seasons. The Spartans have played in and won three high profile games already this season against Oregon, Michigan and Ohio State. They have won the Cotton and Rose Bowls in the past two seasons. Michigan State is accustomed to the spotlight.

Iowa? Not so much.

Since an Orange Bowl season in 2009, the Hawkeyes have been muddling in mediocrity averaging only 6.8 wins until this season.

Iowa’s biggest games this year have been against Northwestern and Wisconsin, who were both ranked outside the top 15 at the time. Iowa was ignored for most of the season as the Big Ten East stole the headlines with Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan battling for the East title.

How will this Iowa team play on the big stage?

The Hawkeyes are known for their solid fundamental play and they don’t typically make mistakes. They do not beat themselves. Will the nerves of playing in the program’s biggest game in over five years lead to some uncharacteristic errors?

We will soon find out.
