Week five of the Big Ten football season is already in the books and we are looking at the midway point of the season for some teams. The conference is looking as unpredictable as ever as we had some upsets in week five and the top two teams in the conference, Ohio State and Michigan State, both narrowly avoided upsets at the hands of inferior Big Ten foes.

More from Spartans Football

After the first week of conference play for most Big Ten football squads, there are some teams that are really rising in the national perspective such as Michigan, Iowa and Northwestern. There are five teams ranked in the conference right now and they all seem to be playing well and rising by the week.

Michigan traveled to Maryland to take on the lowly Terrapins in dismal hurricane conditions, but escaped with yet another shutout victory. Iowa hit the road and took down a ranked Wisconsin Badgers team that looked like a Big Ten West favorite. Lastly, Northwestern continues to impress, shutting out Minnesota at home. The Wildcats are for real.

The contenders and pretenders are all starting to take shape while the conference might be losing some luster near the bottom, the teams at the top look stronger than ever — for the most part.

Michigan State is no longer the No. 2 team in the nation after escaping Purdue by three points, but the Spartans dominated most of the game until the fourth quarter. Ohio State also had a tough time holding off Indiana, but the Buckeyes remain No. 1 in the country.

Let’s find out if there’s a new No. 1 in our weekly Big Ten football power rankings.
