And just like that, Alabama is now in the top five once again — our Top 25, at least. The Crimson Tide put an absolute beat down on the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, and once again proved that they are worthy of being in the College Football Playoff. Just when you think Alabama is going to have an off year, it comes back with a big-time win like this.
Baylor had a bye in week four and probably watched a ton of film on the TCU–Texas Tech game to prepare for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech seemed like a dark horse contender in the Big 12, but left this game just looking for answers after allowing 63 points in a loss to Baylor. The Bears’ offense continues to just manhandle opponents while the defense gives up way too many yards and points for a top-five team.
Yes, I dropped Michigan State a spot in the rankings even after a victory only because that win was probably the least satisfying one in the Mark Dantonio era. The Spartans went up 21-0 before halftime and it looked like a blowout over Purdue was in order. However, the Boilermakers outscored MSU 21-3 in the second half to make the game way too close at the end. The lone brights spot for the Spartans: freshmen running backs L.J. Scott and Madre London.
It was an ugly game to behold on Saturday between TCU and the Texas Longhorns as the Horned Frogs walloped the burnt orange crew to a tune of 50-7. Charlie Strong’s team seems to be struggling mightily, but the Horned Frogs are one of the best teams in the country, worthy of the No. 2 spot, in my opinion. Trevone Boykin is the best quarterback in the country right now and he proved that against Texas, passing for 332 yards and five touchdowns.
Even after almost losing to Indiana, I have to keep the Buckeyes No. 1 because no other team has been a knock-it-out-of-the-park choice. The Buckeyes may have made a mistake at the starting quarterback position as it looks like Cardale Jones is fit for a backup, but I’m sure Urban Meyer will stick to his wrong choice. Ezekiel Elliott had the game of his life, however, keeping the Buckeyes on top, rushing for 274 yards and three touchdowns on just 23 carries. Unreal.
